Females Far Outnumber Males By Number In Medical Careers
There are more women than ever applying for spots in medical schools all across the country, which is changing the way medicine is taught and practiced. For several years now, men and women have been equally accepted into medical schools all across the nation. Today it's females whose applications pour into admissions office of medical schools. Why? Ever since the feminist movement occurred, the view of what women should do for a living has changed greatly. Legal and engineering careers are also seeing spikes in the number of females among the ranks. This change has also pressured medical schools to begin accepting more women. Another factor that has increased interest are the regulations and laws that protect women from discrimination in the job market, opening up new opportunities and options than ever before in history.
While schools often track dropout information, there are currently no statistics on the number of women who fail to complete medical school. However, older data indicates that females were more prone to quit than we males, but females usually quit for reasons other than those related to school. Female medical students claim the dropout rate to be equal nowadays because of the fact that more women in medical school means the minority is much bigger than it once was, so there is power in numbers. Because of more women going into the medical field, a lot of the old traditions that were discriminatory have been put to rest.
One example is the way that professors or instructors at university would speak in class, using language or jokes that might be demeaning or degrading to female students. Unfortunately, the joke was sexist and in very poor taste. He gave a list of words; egg, sex, woman and rug then asked which did not belong. His answer was that sex didn't belong because you can't beat sex. This doesn't seem like much, and it is quite tame compared to some of the other things women heard in their days as students, but it isn't very professional and makes women look like the lesser sex. While the humor is demeaning, it is far from the largest issue being faced by female students at medical institutions. There was recently a case where a female medical student was denied the opportunity to finish a physical examination of a male patient because completing the exam required exposing the genitals. Yet, in a near medical bay, her husband, who is also a medical student, was permitted to not only observe, but perform a pelvic exam on a female. In addition, female students are almost always required to answer a question related to having a career and a family at the same time. Males are usually not questioned on this topic. While more women are entering medical schools, there are still very few females serving on admissions committees. This is largely because women continue to battle a prevalent attitude that the medical community can not count on women to continue practicing medicine once they are licensed.
One female staff member who wished to remain anonymous stated that she felt the family and career balance question that is asked of females is not a fair method of determining whether or not females are admitted to medical programs, but she realizes it is the reality. Certain men who are asking the questions use the female's answer against her, no matter which way she answers. The woman says she's isn't sure if she wants children, but if she did she would have someone watch them for her, the interviewer tells her she need to stay with her children. Yet if she does want children, then she is automatically denied for not being committed enough to practicing medicine.
Many people expressed the view that women doctors were more empathatic than their male colleagues. Once in a while, this perception has been exposed as just another stereotype. One medical student who is a female states to have seen some very insensitive women and likewise some extremely sensitive men in her time, but it was more of a personality trait and less of a biological one.
Women do bring some very desirable qualities to the medical field, according to the dean of one medical school. When women are growing up it is more likely that they are taught to be more sensitive and open to other people's needs, which is a plus in modern medicine. Males tend to be more aggressive which is a trait that can work against them in medicine. But, she states that neither characteristic is a given in either gender.
