How You Can Figure Out Why An Auto Won't Start

There is nothing close to the panic induced by a vehicle that won't start. Some people fall to pieces with panic. Others become so enraged that small kids and animals within 5 miles are advised to hide. However, when it comes to a vehicle issue, the first thing to do is always stay calm. There is a science to how vehicles work, and a little knowledge can help detect why the darn thing will not turn over.

The key has to be turned

The ignition system comprises two major processes. The cam shaft is operated by the flywheel begun with the starter motor. This gets the pistons working. The spark plugs ignite the fuel injected to the motor. This makes the piston cycle and combustion begin. When the process doesn't work, panic, anger or desperation can set in. Profanities are often hurled at the insolent car. However, there is an easy way to determine what is going on.

Ensure you make use of hearing to pay attention

Hearing can help a lot when trying to get your motor to turn over. This is why you should listen carefully. Depending on what sounds are heard, you will find usual suspects. Listen for the following:

  • Flywheel-listen for the flywheel engaging which should have a "click" sound. Don't hear a click sound? It's probably your flywheel.
  • Starter – Occasionally the starter will work however not the flywheel. This will lead to a variety of clicking sounds.
  • Fuel pump – the fuel pump will make a "whirr" sound. The fuel is in coolant in some vehicles that have fuel pumps within the tank. Running the vehicle out of gas can trigger the pump to burn out.
  • Bigger problem indicators

If the battery has failed, it will be obvious as the vehicle could be completely dead. If the battery is charged and all the sounds are heard, then this is the issue. That is your best bet. Other possibilities of an issue are the spark plugs or wires malfunctioning, the terminals need cleaning, or there is a dead wire. If these aren't any of your troubles, you need to talk to someone professional. A qualified mechanic should be who you consult next.
